The Project LIFE curriculum addresses many of the Arizona Academic Standards for K-12 education. Classes focus primarily on science objectives, but also meet academic goals in social studies, the arts, health, the workplace, and physical education.
Over one thousand sixth graders from varying ethnic and
socio-economic backgrounds participate in the program each year from Flagstaff Unified School District and local charter schools. About 50% of those students qualify for federally subsidized food programs. Ethnicity of the elementary student population is approximately 55% Caucasian, 24% Native American, 18% Hispanic, 2% African American, 1% Asian and other.
In addition to
environmental classes, students participate in
story telling, songs, games, art projects, and
square dancing. During their week at camp
students make new friends, do camp chores, and
learn to take personal responsibility for health
and safety. It is this total experience that
truly becomes more than the sum of each part,
creating new interests and personal lifelong
memories.
